Working on the principal that hair expands or contracts dependant on the relative humidity, this thermohygrograph allows a continuous measurement of relative humidity and temperature over a given period of time - monitoring the environmental changes.
A bundle of hair is stretched between a fixed pin and a moveable pin and is attached to a series of levers. As the hair expands and contracts the pen attached to the lever will plot this movement on the chart, as it rotates around on the cylinder.
The rate of rotation can be adjusted allowing humidity to be plotted daily, weekly or monthly, depending on your requirements. This time cycle is selected by simply pushing the changeover switch.
To enable humidity and temperature to be plotted at the same time, another lever is attached to a bimetallic strip to record the temperature. This allows you to record the relationship between the two and look at the fluctuations that occur – an influx of people into a room at one given time may show a large fluctuation in the room's humidity.
The charts are made using dust-proof paper and have holes for easy binding in a file. It is important to monitor the chart regularly so that any immediate problems are responded to- most people just look at the charts at the end of a recording period.
An all transparent acryl-resin case provides a full view of the chart paper without opening the case, making monitoring easier. These charts need to be changed at the end of each recording period.
