The Air and Water Centre recommends the use of Ionic Silver Sticks with any portable humidifier.

Silver ions are effective against more than 650 types of microbe. Placing an Ionic Silver Stick in your humidifier water tank you can help control the development of bacteria and fungi, reducing unpleasant odours and the frequency of cleaning. Designed for portable and mobile evaporative humidifiers with water tanks, these sticks contain no chemical additives, are self-regulating, need no power supply and are simple to install and use.

For guidance, for a humidifier with a fresh mains water supply operating in a clean, cool environment, one stick is effective in humidifier reservoirs up to 10 litres. Multiple sticks can be used in larger appliances, so if your humidifier has a 20 litre reservoir, use two. More sticks might be required where conditions favour the development of microbes such as warmth. Ionic Silver Sticks must be used in conjunction with the humidifier manufacturer's operating and maintenance instructions.

With a working life of 4,000hrs the Ionic Silver Stick will need to be replaced every 3-6 months (this may vary depending on how often the humidifier is used and the quality of the water).

I use my Boneco humidifier every day during the winter, when the central heating is on. For a few days recently, I was feeling ill until I changed my Ionic Silver Stick, now I'm back to normal, so Ionic Silver Sticks are absolutely essential. I wouldn't use my Boneco humidifier without one, but they are very expensive and I guess some people will do without them. I would like to see you reduce the price of these essential items to encourage more people to use them, because as I say, they are essential for health purposes. Kevin Selby

This gives much peace of mind as I know that dirty humidifiers can propel all sorts of bacteria into the air if not maintained and cleaned properly and this provides a back-up to the normal routine of cleaning out the machine when the water tank runs dry.

I have one of these in my Boneco 2055D humidifier. For something so small and simple, it does a great job at getting rid of bacteria and viruses in our baby's bedroom. Easier sleeping for us as parents
